it may be early yet, but for all the talk of last place overall this team really doesnt look half bad.

Ive really been impressed with howard. I have no idea if it was the goalie coach change last year or losing some weight but he just seems sharper overall. Hes tracking the puck better, and letting the play come to him making short compact movements from side to side and covering his angles really well.

the kid line gets it done again, which is crucial in that the way forward for this team largely rests on their shoulders. A few years down the road if larkin and mantha arent carrying this team its going to be a total rebuild and potentially a decade in the gutter. You can already see larkin starting to carry the puck through the middle more, and taking the puck to the net more often instead of around it, even if its not always working out, its what hes going to have to do to take that next step.

Interesting shift in philosophy from the babcock-> blashill book of line combinations. Z between nyquist and tats. Larkin between frk and mantha. A line without a vet. 2 lines without an anchor. A top 6 without abby or helm or whatever scrub that normally needs to "keep the flies off" or carry a piano. Both lines look good. The Z line in particular looked alot better than they did the first game.

The power play is still 50/50. When they get in and establish possession, they move the puck well. When they dont they waste entire power plays trying to get in the zone.

The helm nielsen abby line also generated some high end chances.

A little bit sloppy at times in terms of our passing, but the energy so far seems pretty good.

Howard was one of the worst goalies in the league 2 years ago but was one of the best last year and he starting the season just as well. Last thing this organization needs right now.

If Larkin can cut it at 2C, Z stays healthy and keeps playing well and Howard keeps his GAA under 2, this team could over achieve and get the 8th seed. Our forwards are OK, Howie has been better than OK so far, but there's just no way this D doesn't get completely exposed as the season goes on. It's comprised of 3 6/7s and 3 4/5s.

That pass was just plain DUMB! As said in the post game, he had room to skate it up.
