According to CapFriendly, the Detroit Red Wings are exactly at the league's the $75 million maximum with only 22 players on their roster. The team would need to waive or a trade player in order to add Athanasiou, or anyone else, to their 23-man roster.

this was somewhat inevitable, and once the season began it became even worse for AA. At the time franzen was placed on IR the team only gets relief to the extent they are over the cap. So whether we were 1,2 or 3 mil over the cap thats the total relief we can get from franzens ltir for the remainder of the season. In any of those situations we are left with zero capspace after franzens LTIR.

$2.2M is a nice deal.

If he goes 25-15-40 for two years at $2.2M... who the fuck is going to feel like they didn't get their money's worth.

Holland drawing this line in the sand is mindboggling.

This is all on AA and his agent! they lied about the KHL option and Holland called their bluff, now AA is too stupid to make the choice of making $1.9m/yr or nothing. sing the deal, come back over and tear it up. Then you can get paid. It's not that hard to figure out

It takes 2 reasonable people to come to a contract agreement.

that article is flawed on a number of fronts. The 2.5 mil russian offer is off the table if it ever existed. The swiss team HClugarno has publicly stated they have no intention of offering him a contract.

Hockey News gets it.
http://www.thehockeynews.com/news/artic ... -red-wings

And it seems that opponents of the Red Wings are beginning to sense that Detroit is in a difficult spot here. First, it doesn’t have the cap space to make Athanasiou an offer he thinks he deserves. Coming out of his entry-level deal with similar numbers, Tomas Tatar was offered a three-year deal from the Red Wings at $2.75 million per season, which actually makes Athanasiou’s $2.5 million demands seem pretty reasonable. But it’s actually not that simple because after this season, restricted free agents Anthony Mantha and Dylan Larkin will be entering the same situation as Athanasiou is in right now – restricted free agents coming off entry-level deals with no arbitration rights and almost no hope of being tendered an offer sheet.

Tatar's stats were better, but his cap hit was higher and the cap was lower.

$2.5M is a reasonable ask.

I'm guessing that Tatar asked for $3M+ before he settled at $2.75.

Just like I guess that Athanasiou would probably sign at $2.2M.

And like I said...even if Athanasiou didn't improve on 18 goals 30 points, when you look at at his $2,2Mx2 contract, are you going to be crying about that deal?

For real?

Sounds like some of you homers are just posturing.

Too bad that AA doesn't get it! He would rather make zero dollars instead of $1.9m

So, Holland is making things worse by not settling early.

"Look at his points/60 minutes of ice time. He’s been among the league leaders for both seasons he has played here. AND he gets zero power play time and really no time on a top line with decent linemates." True because of the way wing coach treats his players. Can't blame AA for this, he has the balls to do what most other youngsters in Detroit swallow. The negative is it will cost him in his career the longer he holds out at this point in his career. Teams will black list him as a trouble maker. The longer he waits the harder it will be for him to fit back in as a wing. The players will shun him for not doing the hard work of training camp only to push another player who did off the team.
