Joe Hicketts

Postby El Jefe » Wed Oct 04, 2017 10:54 am

I only saw a portion of one pre-season game, so didn't get to see much, but I liked watching Joe Hicketts play. The guy is exciting, fast, good with the puck, and looks like he's having a blast out there. He was one of the more exciting defenseman I have seen for the Wings in a while, even if the sample is small. And then I saw this quote in the Detroit News this morning:

Hicketts looked strong in the preseason, dishing the puck well, including on the power play, carrying it with some authority and delivering some hard body checks. But his path is blocked.

His path is blocked...by this defense?

Blocked by bad contracts not NHL talent.

What would it take to replace Oullette or Jensen with Hicketts? Do their contracts block Hicketts's path? I would expect Hicketts would make less than those two, but I don't fully understand the cap implications of those guys' exit.

There really wouldn't be any cap ramifications. The team just feels they're better

Fewer young players want to play for Holland and with a weak coach therir chance of development is low...Look at Nyquiest lots of potential 3-4 year ago and now 28 nwith big contract and barely average production.

They probably don't want to lose those guys for nothing, especially when you see the injury history of Kronwall and Ericsson.

My guess is Kronwall to IR. Green traded later this season. There will be a spot for him.

I won't lie, I'm a fan of XO. I think he is a smart defenseman, willing to drop the gloves every once in a while... unfortunately, he's a bit slow.

Jensen sure can skate -- and that's the only reason he's in the lineup.

I like what I've seen from Hicketts. But, right now he's more Lebda than Krug, in terms of IQ. He needs to build on his rookie AHL season and continue to improve his production and +/-.

I'm willing to bet that Kenny's first recall is going to be Lashoff

Hicketts and Jensen can't play a lick of defense.
XO is just a little too small and a little too slow to be a real good D, but he's a fairly solid third pairing guy.

He's a western Canada boy, so he could have a long career in the organization.
1) NCAA or Michigan kid
2) Swede (dying breed in the winged wheel)
3) Western Canada
