DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings placed defenseman Ryan Sproul in waivers Monday, after he was cleared medically, following off-season ACL surgery.

If Sproul clears at noon Tuesday he can be assigned to the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins.

Sproul appeared in 27 games for Detroit last season (one goal, six assists, minus-7). He couldn't secure a regular spot in the lineup due to a lack of assertiveness, according to coach Jeff Blashill, and defensive issues. The team liked his size (6-4, 205), big right-handed shot and offensive potential.

I kind of suspected something like this. We need a spare forward more than we need 8d especially with witkowski at forward who can switch to d if needed.

Also import to keep in mind that the league takes a snapshot of your cap at the beginning of the year and how close to the cap we are will define how much cap relief we get for franzen on ltir.

This could potentially be huge if aa isnt signed by then but also allows us to send booth down in a blink if or when aa signs without having to wait for him to clear waivers.

Dumb question, why was Booth waived if he is being assigned to Detroit?

So he doesn't have to be waived in the future.

At some point, they may decide to send him to GR. Since he cleared waivers now, they won't have to put him on waivers next time they want to ship him to the AHL.

Waiver wire is busy at this time of the season, so that also protects him from getting picked up.

I think Sproul and Hicketts could make an awesome odd couple pair in GR.
One is a physically gifted lackadaisical oaf and the other is a physically challenged, extremely competitive, cerebral player.

Maybe we could get them to pee in the same fountain together while it's being struck by lightning so they can switch bodies, and Hicketts could actually put Sproul's physical tools to good use.

Waived and cleared..... tells you what the League thinks of him.
