So you judge a prospect's future by the GM's tone of voice at the draft? Sounds like the Wings are fast tracking him to Grand Rapids

To me it sounds like they aren't happy with the development at St. Cloud.
He'll get a look in Grand Rapids and then head to the WHL next year and return the following year.

The reports on Cholowski out of St. Cloud was that he was extremely poor defensively.

not entirely accurate.

"He was the next guy on our board," Wright said. "He's just a heckuva hockey player. He's got great mobility, he's a very good skater, he's got good puck skills, he can move pucks very well. He can jump into the rush, he can defend plays in all situations.

"He's an elite thinker," Wright said. "We think his hockey sense is very good. He's just a guy that can play in any position, late in a game, early in a game, never have to hide him because of size and skating ability.

Other gms weren't openly laughing at Holland for picking Kronwall.
He was projected to be a first rounder.

Kronwall was ranked the 26th Euro skater in the CSS rankings in 2000.
Funny thing, he was ranked 28th Euro the year before, when Z was drafted.
That year, Z was ranked 41st.

Kopecky was ranked 27th Euro in 2000, Kronwall's year.

Looking at those late 90s and early 00s CSB euro rankings, Detroit was fortunate to get the players they go.
So many busts in the top 10.

Hudler was ranked 3rd by CSB in 2002. Filppula 40th. Fleischmann 39th. The Wings killed it in 2002, getting Hudler as low as they did and then finding gems in Fleischmann and Flip.

Kopecky was drafted out of the WHL.
I know that the HockeyNews had Kronner ranked in the first round. He scored 5 goals at the WJC and had some big hits and his stock rose for the final Central Scouting rankings. (They have preseason, midseason and final rankings every year).

When I saw his pick this morning the first thing I thought was "damn, he looks 12."
