Maybe so. No matter what happens, it's going to be a gritty stretch of suckitude. Hey, at least we still have...the Lions.

It's one thing to lose with a purpose. It's something completely different to lose because you are rudderless.

Lose with conviction, boys!

If you are losing because you have tried to accumulate draft picks, that ok.

If you are losing because you have a bunch of young players in the line up, that's ok.

If you are losing because you mortgaged your future on a Cup run, that's ok.

If you are losing because you signed a bunch of third liners to long term contracts and traded away your top pick for Datsyuks contract because you think you can play for 8th in the East for the next 4 years and you are failing at that small goal, you are rudderless.

If you are losing because you have been trying to rebuild on the fly for too long and the prospects haven't panned out and several key players have succumbed to career-ending injuries...you might be a redneck.

A lot of prospects have panned out. They're good. Just not superstars.
For the most part, given where the Wings have picked, they've drafted very well.
The problem is we don't have any star caliber defensive youngsters.

Rangers need a puck moving righty- Green is certainly not 'safe', but maybe we can move him there.

I only trade Green this year if he brings a really good return. Next year's draft should be deeper, and he might bring more as a pending rental.

The number of players we drafted that made the nhl is truly outstanding given our draft position.

Its equally mindblowing that we haven't been able to draft a top pair dman or at the very least a second line center in the past decade+.

Clearly its hard to rate the last 2 to 3 years. But dozens of 1st and second line centers and top 4 even top 2 defensemen have gone late first round or 2nd or 3rd round since we last drafted one.

I do however think part of where we are now is still reeling from the lockout in 04. Im not sure any team was hit harder by that. Wed traded away most of our top picks for years..and had to cut payroll in half. From 05 to maybe 2010 we couldnt dare part with guys like franzen flip or hudler because we didnt have dick in the system to replace them with.

Clearly some better moves could have been made. But very few teams manage to change cores and stay competitive without having a down year or 2 or 3 or 10. We got luck with dats and z on the first core change. But barring hitting big on a few late first second or third round picks... This train was bound to come off the tracks sooner or later.

The good news is larkin mantha and aa all seem to have alot of upside. Svech amd bert may as well. Time will tell on cholowski and saajvari. A few years of them developing..a few good picks some contracts expire.. this may not take that long

Although, it looked good the Jensen was voted top D-man in WCHA, Sproul in the OHL and Ouellet in the Q all in the same year. Plus, Backman and Marchenko looked solid.

Your first line is very true. The Wings have drafted good players in all areas, but they have not had many chances to get a star player and everyone else who is anyone has done that in the span of "the streak."

Did we trade for a couple of superstars this offseason? I've been away.

The only trade was the Joe for Little Caesar.
